Petra Lang als Brangäne. Tristan und Isolde (Inszenierung von Christoph Marthaler 2005 – )

Petra Lang

After completing her violin studies, Petra Lang studied singing with Gertie Charlent and Ingrid Bjoner and was involved in master classes with Brigitte Fassbaender, Hans Hotter, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Peter Schreier. Starting off as a lyric mezzo, she turned to Wagner early in her career also studying her roles with Astrid Varnay.

Petra Lang quickly became an internationally sought-after interpreter of Wagner roles such as Kundry, Sieglinde, Ortrud, Brangäne and Venus, but also of Bartok’s Judith, Berlioz’ Cassandre and Strauss’ Ariadne.

After her repertoire change in 2012 she added Brünnhilde (Die Walküre, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung) to her repertoire with concert performances in Berlin, Stuttgart, Luzern, Bucharest and Bamberg as well as staged at the Opéra National de Paris (Philippe Jordan). Her international break-through in this demanding role came in the 2013/2014 season in the highly acclaimed new Ring production by Dieter Dorn at the Grand Théâtre de Genève followed by equally successful performances in Budapest (Ádám Fischer), at the Munich State Opera (Kirill Petrenko) and at the Dortmund concert house (Gabriel Feltz).

At the Bayreuth Festival Petra Lang has sung Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde (2005/2006), and appeared as Ortrud in Lohengrin by Hans Neuenfels in 2011, 2013 and 2014. In addition to her successes on the opera stage, she is a versatile concert singer and known for her sensitive interpretation of the works of Gustav Mahler.

She performs worldwide with all the major orchestras. Important conductors in her career include Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Semyon Bychkov, Riccardo Chailly, M. W. Chung, Andrew Davis, Colin Davis, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Adam Fischer, Ivan Fischer, Bernard Haitink, Marek Janowski, Armin Jordan, Philippe Jordan, Zubin Mehta, Ingo Metzmacher, Riccardo Muti, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Leif Segerstam, Simon Rattle, Donald Runnicles, Peter Schneider, Jeffrey Tate, Christian Thielemann, Silvio Varviso and Simone Young.

In addition, Petra Lang has a successful career as a Lied singer. Her comprehensive repertoire includes Lieder from Franz Schubert to Anton Webern. She works with pianists such as Adrian Baianu, Malcolm Martineau, Carmen Piazzini, Maurizio Pollini, Wolfram Rieger, Charles Spencer and Einar Steen-Noekleberg. The venues of her song recitals include Wigmore Hall (London), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Schubertiade (Feldkirch), Semper Opera House (Dresden), La Scala (Milan), Carnegie-Weill Hall (New York), Salle Pleyel (Paris) and the Edinburgh Festival.

Petra Lang won numerous awards including two Grammys for her Cassandre on the LSO's live recording of Berlioz' Les Troyens. The musical education of young singers is important to her and she gives international master classes as often as possible.
