The German bass studied at the Musikhochschule Detmold and with Professor Hans Sotin at the Hochschule für Musik Cologne, where he got his diploma in opera and concert singing with excellence.
After first stage engagements at the urban stages, cathedrals and the opera house of Bonn, he was engaged at the Saxonian State Opera of Dresden (Semperoper) where he is in permanent engagement since 2001.
Working with conductors such as Myung-Whun Chung, Daniele Gatti, Fabio Luisi, Kent Nagano, Peter Schneider, Marcello Viotti und Leif Segerstam he broadened his repertoire: Handel’s Saul, Sarastro (Zauberfloete), Komtur (Don Giovanni), Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Eremit (Freischuetz), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Padre Guardiano (Forza del Destino), Filippo II (Don Carlo), Landgraf (Tannhauser), Koenig Heinrich (Lohengrin), Fasolt (Rheingold), Koenig Marke (Tristan), Gurnemanz (Parsifal), Mussorgski’s Pimen (Boris Godunow), Britten’s Squenz (A midsummernight’s dream), Wassermann (Rusalka), Seneca (L´incoronazione di Poppea)
Guest performances led him (among other cities) to Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Salzburg Festival, Bayreuth Festival, Glyndebourne Festival, ViennaStaatsoper, Geneva, La Scala Milan, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, MET New York, San Francisco and Chicago.
Apart from his stage commitment he dedicates himself intensively to the concert repertoire. With conductors such as Harnoncourt, Masur and Thielemann he performed works by J.S. Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven up to the great romantic oratorios.
Upcoming engagements at the Staatsoper Vienna, Antwerp, Lyon, Bayreuth, Hamburg and Staatsoper Munich, Salzburg Festival.
