Studied photography in Munich and worked with Max Keller as a part of the lighting department of Münchner Kammerspiele from 1995 until 1998. After being assistant director for productions at Grand Théâtre de Genève, Lincoln Center New York and Münchner Kammerspiele he started to work as a lighting designer for theatre, opera, exhibitions, performances and installations in 2000.
His work includes more than 100 productions for theater such as La Monnaie, Brussels; Opéra Bastille, Opéra Garnier, Le Châtelet, Paris; Metropolitan Opera, New York; Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow; Festivals in Avignon and Aix-en-Provence; Salzburg Festival; Schaubühne, Berlin; Teatro Real, Madrid and Sydney Opera House. He is working with directors such as Thomas Ostermeier, La Fura dels Baus, William Kentrigde, Michael Haneke and is a long-time collaborator of Robert Wilson.
Urs Schönebaum is also developing lighting designs for art projects by Vanessa Beecroft, Anselm Kiefer, Dan Graham and Marina Abramović as well as for installations in Krakow, Munich, Salzburg, at Expo 02 in Flims (Switzerland) and New York.
