32 minutes (!) of stormy applause, standing ovations, 49 curtains – with the acclaimed performance of Götterdämmerung on august 28th 2017 endet not only the 106th Bayreuth Festival, but also the “Ring of the Nibelungen”, directed by Frank Castorf, is now theater history. For five years the visually stunning interpretation (stage Aleksandar Denić) was on the agenda.. As usual, however, the focus of the festival was on the new production of the season: Barrie Kosky directed Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The audience and the criticism were of the same opinion (exceptionally): a great litter, not just scenic. With Michael Volle (Hans Sachs) and Johannes Martin Kränzle (Beckmesser) new standards were set in the interpretation of these roles. More than 10.000 Wagnerianers watched the premiere live in one of the broadcast cinemas. The comprehensive program of the program was also well received: caesura, discourse, lectures – Bayreuth has defended its claim: there is no better place for the performance of Richard Wagner’s works around the world. Nearly 60.000 visitors from 47 countries had been able to secure the coveted tickets for the sold out performances.
