The German soprano Dorothea Herbert is an acclaimed artist on German and international concert and opera stages. After studying at the Richard-Strauss-Konservatorium in Munich and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, she became a member of the Welsh National Opera’s opera studio. 

In the 2016/17 season, she made her debut as Amelia in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven and the Nationaltheater Mannheim, returning there the following season as Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. In 2018/19, she made her debut at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe as Agathe in Weber’s Der Freischütz, and a year later she made her debut in the same role at the Semperoper Dresden. In 2019/20, she appeared as Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio in Chemnitz and as Gerhilde in Wagner’s Die Walküre at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam with Marc Albrecht.

She made her debut at the Theater an der Wien in 2020 as Floriana in Leoncavallo’s Zazà. She also made her debut in the title roles of Strauss’ Salome and Dvořák’s Rusalka at the Krefeld and Mönchengladbach theatres, where she also celebrated her role debut as Sieglinde in Die Walküre in the same year. This was followed in 2021 by engagements as Leonore in Fidelio in a new production at Glyndebourne and Senta in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman at the National Theatre in Prague. She was particularly acclaimed by critics for her portrayal of Elsa in Wagner’s Lohengrin at the Staatstheater Darmstadt in 2022. Other recent engagements include the title role in Strauss’ Salome at the Tiroler Landestheater and Agathe in Der Freischütz at the Staatstheater Mainz and Staatstheater Kassel.

The 2023/24 season included the revival of Rusalka at the Freiburg Theatre and the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe as well as a new production of Salome at the Staatstheater Braunschweig and Lohengrin at the Hagen Theatre. With the new production of Strauss’ Elektra, directed by Philipp Stölzl, Dorothea Herbert made guest appearances with Berliner Philharmoniker under Kirill Petrenko in Baden-Baden and (in concert) at the Philharmonie Berlin.
