Iain Paterson
Since his critically acclaimed debut at the Salzburg Easter Festival in Das Rheingold under Sir Simon Rattle, Iain Paterson’s operatic engagements have taken him to the most prestigious theatres in the world.
Highlights this season include a number of significant role debuts: Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) for English National Opera, and Wotan (Die Walküre) for Houston Grand Opera (as part of their Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle) and Leipzig Opera. Paterson also makes his debut at the Bayreuth Festival with Kurwenal Tristan und Isolde and at La Monnaie with Peneois Daphne, and returns to the BBC Proms for Vaughan Williams Sancta civitas with the Hallé and Sir Mark Elder.
In future seasons, Paterson will return to the Wiener Staastoper for Jochanaan Salome, to Houston Grand Opera for his role debut of The Wanderer (Siegfried), return to the Bayreuth Festival and make his debut for Oper Stuttgart.
Recent operatic highlights include Wotan (Das Rheingold) at Houston Grand Opera, Oreste Elektra at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Captain Balstrode Peter Grimes at the Wiener Staatsoper and at English National Opera, Amfortas (Parsifal) at the Beijing Festival, and the title role of Don Giovanni for Opera Vlaanderen. Past highlights also include Wotan in a concert performance of Wagner's Das Rheingold conducted by Daniel Barenboim as part of the Berlin State Opera's production of the Ring Cycle at the BBC Proms, Fasolt (Das Rheingold) for his debut at Teatro alla Scala, the title role in Don Giovanni for English National Opera, Gunther (Götterdämmerung) for the Bavarian State Opera Munich and at The Metropolitan Opera, and Forester The Cunning Little Vixen for Bergen National Opera.
On the concert platform, Paterson has performed Hans Sachs Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg with the The Hallé, Beethoven Symphony No.9 with the CBSO, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland, Hallé, BBC Symphony and BBC Philharmonic orchestras, Elgar Dream of Gerontius with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and at the Edinburgh International Festival, The Kingdom with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Hallé, and Christus St Matthew Passion with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Conductors he has worked with include Sir Antonio Pappano, James Levine, Daniel Barenboim, Andris Nelsons, Sir Simon Rattle, Kent Nagano, Sir Mark Elder, Christoph von Dohnányi, Vasily Petrenko, Philippe Jordan, Gianandrea Noseda and Edward Gardner.
Iain Paterson studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. In the early stage of his career he was a company principal at ENO, with roles including Gunther, Figaro and Amonasro Aïda.
