Stephanie Houtzeel is a soloist at the Vienna State Opera where she regularly sings roles such as Octavian, der Komponist, Dorabella, Orlofsky, Nicklausse, Kreusa (Medea/Reimann), Jenny Hill (Mahagonny) or Miranda (The Tempest/Adès). In 2016 she created the role of La Haine in the opening premere Armide (Gluck), as well as “Vera” in the world premiere of Patchwork, a new opera for children.

In recent seasons, the role of Octavian has taken Stephanie to the Paris Opéra and to the Kennedy Center (with Renée Fleming/Christoph Eschenbach). She sang the Komponist under Fabio Luisi (Zurich), under Franz Welser-Möst and Sir Jeffrey Tate in Vienna and this season under Marek Janowski in Tokyo.

Additional 2016 highlights include the title role in Xerxes in Berlin (Komische Oper) and Graz - garnering a nomination for the Austrian Music Theatre Award - along with Stephanie’s debut at the Bayreuther Festspiele (Wellgunde/Waltraute/Second Norn). She will return to Bayreuth in 2017, both for the Ring and as Venus in a new staging of Tannhäuser for young audiences. In 2018 the artist performs Götterdämmerung with the Hong Kong Philharmonic under Jaap van Zweden.

Stephanie Houtzeel’s extensive repertoire, from Ottavia to Marguerite, Arsace to Charlotte, Idamante to Meg Page, has taken her to the Salzburger Festspiele, the Semperoper Dresden, Opéra de Lyon, the Royal Danish Opera, the New York City Opera, Theater an der Wien, Opéra National du Rhin, the New Israeli Opera, the Grazer Oper or the Vlaamse Opera.

A regular concert artist, she most recently performed with Valery Gergiev and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. She also appears on several recordings: the title roles in both Lully’s Armide (Naxos) and von Suppé’s Fatinitza (CPO) and the alto solos in Mozart’s Requiem (Currentzis/Alpha Records). 2016 marked the highly-acclaimed release of her solo Lieder CD Nostalgia with pianist Charles Spencer.
