Tilmann Unger
Tilmann Unger's wide-ranging repertoire and expressive stage presence have made him a much sought-after guest on opera and concert stages.
In the 2023/24 season, two major role debuts are in Tilmann Unger's schedule.
He will perform the role of the Stranger in Korngold's Das Wunder der Heliane in a new production at the Nederlandse Reisopera (musical direction Jac van Steen, stage director Jakob Peters-Messer).
Later on in the season he debuts as Tristan in a new production of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau.
The third new production of the season features Beethoven's Fidelio at the Theater Magdeburg , in which he can be heard as Florestan.
Following his engagements at the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, the Staatstheater Augsburg and the Gärtnerplatz Theater Munich, Tilmann Unger has been has been freelancing since 2012.
Guest engagements have taken him to the Komische Oper Berlin, Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, Semperoper Dresden, Staatsoper Hannover, Oper Leipzig, Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Staatstheater in Braunschweig, Mainz, Nürnberg and Wiesbaden, the theatres in Lübeck, Magdeburg and Münster and the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar, among others. In Austria he has made guest appearances at the Graz Opera, the Landestheater in Innsbruck and Linz and at the Vienna Volksoper.
Tilmann Unger impresses in the dramatic repertoire with Wagner roles such as Tristan, Siegfried (Siegfried & Götterdämmerung), Siegmund (Walküre), Loge (Rheingold), Stolzing (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and Parsifal, but also as Tambourmajor in Wozzeck by A. Berg, as Max (Freischütz), Stewa and Albert Gregor in Jenůfa and Die Sache Makropulos by Janáček, as Grigori (Boris Godunov), Hans (Die verkaufte Braut), Babinsky (Schwanda, der Dudelsackpfeifer), Jim Mahoney (Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny) or also as Tassilo (Gräfin Mariza) and Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus).
He has worked with conductors such as Patrick Lange, Sir Roger Norrington, Ainārs Rubiķis, Jac van Steen and Christopher Ward as well as with directors such as Calixto Bieto, Andreas Homoki, Peter Konwitschny, Josef Köpplinger and Jakob Peters-Messer, to name but a few.
Concerts have taken him to the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, the Philharmonie am Gasteig Munich, the Meistersingerhalle Nürnberg, the Vienna Konzerthaus, festivals such as the Tiroler Beethoventage and the Kissinger Sommer, as well as to Canada, the USA and Asia.
His concert repertoire includes works such as Beethoven's Missa solemnis and Symphony No. 9, Bruch's oratorio Moses or Bruckner's Te Deum as well as Das klagende Lied and Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler.
In 2007 Tilmann Unger was awarded the Bavarian Kunstförderpreis. He was born in Villingen and studied at the Musicology Department of the University of Freiburg and at the University of Music Würzburg.
