Review Festival 2020 and Ticketing 2021
Today marks the end of the very different Bayreuth Festival 2020. Who would have thought at the beginning of the year that for the first time since 1951 there would be a summer without the Festival? The cancellation, which has no alternative in the Ring Year, has not only saddened all visitors, but also the employees* and participants. As a "sign of hope", the Festival, in cooperation with Musica Bayreuth and with the support of Haus Wahnfried, organized a benefit concert on July 25, at which all participants performed without pay and 400 spectators* were able to listen to sounds from Wagner's living room in the meadows in front of Haus Wahnfried in beautiful weather. Of course, this is not a substitute for a festival, but we are looking forward to the 2021 Festival full of hope. Since no one can say with certainty at this time what the summer 2021 editions will be, we have decided to postpone ticket sales accordingly. The order documents will be sent in January 2021 exclusively to customers who purchased tickets in the 2020 season but did not make use of the refund. The 2021 season schedule will be published on the homepage at the end of the year. It is not yet possible to foresee the contingent of freely available seats in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, as theoretically there may be a limited number of seats available. Therefore a sale of possible free seats will take place in May 2021 at the earliest and exclusively as an online instant purchase. The "waiting year system" applied in Bayreuth will be suspended for the 2021 season. All registered customers will remain at the same level of waiting years accumulated until the 2020 season. Further information on the sale of tickets will be published on our homepage in due course. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Bayerischer Rundfunk and Deutsche Grammophon, who have made a very extensive virtual Wagner festival possible for us and all those interested in Wagner. Three legendary ring productions, the current Tannhäuser, Parsifal and Tristan productions, archive treasures with Karajan, Krauss and others, documentaries, and a crash course for all Wagner fans accompanied us throughout the summer. "Diskurs Bayreuth" online, the exciting supporting program of the Bayreuth Festival, started with the online discussion series "Hier gilt's der Kunst" and the video performance "The Loop of the Nibelung" by Simon Steen-Andersen. Exciting discussions about music and politics took place with Daniel Barenboim and the writer Thea Dorn, Sir András Schiff, Martina Gedeck, Barrie Kosky, Dörte Schmidt, Dieter Grimm as well as Björn Gottstein, Julia Spinola and Bernhard Neuhoff. "Diskurs Bayreuth" also stands for the artistic exploration of the work and influence of Richard Wagner and has presented a world premiere every year since 2018 as a commissioned work of the Bayreuth Festival. Originally planned as a live performance in front of an audience during the festival, composer and media artist Simon Steen-Andersen used all the free space now available to him for a unique video production. Together with musicians from the Bayreuth Festival, he embarked on an audiovisual exploration of the mythical Bayreuth Festival Theatre and, with the help of an ingenious "chain reaction machine", transformed it into both an instrument and a stage set. From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank all those who have helped us so much in this difficult time with their sympathy, donations or the deferral of the refund of ticket prices! In this solidarity with you, we remain hopeful and excited about everything to come!
